An article dated August 10, 1998, that I read about just recently, spoke about cancer prevention through changes in the diet. This article was written by HealthNews, who are the publishers of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Thanks for responding with some interesting information. In my opinion, I think that Alexanderis right about suspecting highly processed foods etc. as the possible culprit. I have my own thoughts or theories about how cancer rates may have possibly increased as we Americans continue eating piles of junk food. Our diets in general, are not only lacking in adequate supplies of fruits and vegetables, but they are filled with many high calorie processed foods, with many different types of hidden sugars.
I think that it is important to make a more conscious effort to try to live a better life, by eating healthy, exercising etc. Time and time again, it is proven that people like that statistically will get sick less often, including the deadly disease of cancer.
But what about the recent studies that attempted to prove a link between breast cancer and the intake of saturated fat? Those studies found just the opposite. The women that ate the most saturated fat had the fewest occurances of breast cancer. I don't think meat consumption is the culprit. My research tends to point more towards the highly processed foods and polyunsaturated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils in particular. These products have greatly increased in the American diet in the last 50 or so years, right along with the cancer rate, and right along with the decline in the consumption of stable saturated fats.
Cancer runs in my family,my mum, uncle and all grandparents have died of it. Im 27,a smoker and starting to feel like I'm doomed. The more stressed I get about it, the more I smoke. I guess theres only so much I can do, and I suppose I'm being positive by looking for prevention now rather than a cure later on. I have improved my died significantly to include fruit,fish and salad on a daily basis as well as swimming 3/4 times a week. Are there and specific nutritional supplements or additional sorts of food that anyone can recommend?
Hope this doesnt seem trivial, as I know there are a lot of people reading this who are in a bad way.

You need fish, flax, olive or walnut and boarge oil. these are omega 3s and eicosa oils. omega 6, like corn oil is bad even if unhydrogenated. Borage oil causes cancer remission in mice.
My Dad was diagnosed in August SCLC. They found the cells on his lymph node, but could not detect the tumor in his lung. His only symptoms were double vision and leg and arm weakness. He was treated for many things before they finally figured out he had cancer and these other symptoms are most likely due to a rare cancer related syndrome called paraneoplastic. He has had 4 chemo rounds and 5 weeks of daily radiation. When he went in last week for his 5th chemo, he was too sick and the doctor ordered an MRI and CT Scan. Since last week he has began feeling a little better, possibly due to an increase in his dosage of prednisone. The results of the MRI are clear and the CT Scan no longer shows any cancer on his lymph node and still no lung tumor. This was good news to me at first, but then I remembered that the doctor told us SCLC almost always reoccurs, so now I am terrified. Especially after reading stories about people dying weeks after reoccurence.
My Dad will have his fifth chemo next week and last chemo after Thanksgiving.
I am scared of what will happen next. How often should I insist on followup testing? The unknown is so terrifying and my heart goes out to all of those who have had to deal with this and other cancers.
My mother was probably one of the people you read about. thats great that your father is in remission and so was my mother.from my experiance just be sure that if your father has any new symptons at all, check them out, and if he has new growths, don't let the doctor talk you into waiting to long to recheck it. facts are untreated small cell kills in 8 weeks. my mother had a spot that they didn't know wether or not was a regrowth , and the doctors rechecked it in 6 weeks. by the recheck it was in her liver and brain, she died 2 weeks later. if they had either done a brain scan or a recheck in 2 weeks instead of 6 we would have had a chance to fight it again. she was too weak by the recheck. i would say have new symptons examined, even if they are minor, and if something comes up questionabe on the scans, recheck it in a couple of weeks. good luck to you. i hope your father's doctors do better than my mother's did
I'm 18 and a freshman in college. My dad died of cancer when I was 10. I've been thinking about him a lot lately and have been feeling depressed. It's been 8 years, but I'm still not over his death. I get very sad because I can't even remember what he looks like anymore except for pictures, but there aren't many. My mom has now gotten remarried to a nice man, but he's nothing like my father. I feel like I don't fit in anywhere. Can anyone help me?
My mother was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in July. She is currently taking chemotherapy (third round) and will begin radiation at the end of October. I would like to hear from anyone with information about this type of cancer. What side effects did you have from the radiation? chemotherapy? She is considering a trial involving a vaccine at Duke. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994 but the doctors are saying their is no relationship between the two. I'd appreciate any info you might have.
My mother was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in July of 99. The tumor was the size of an orange. They give her six months. Well, mom and I will be going shopping tomorrow. She has only had chemo to date. Her Dr. is very good and orders full body scans every 3 months. Her tumor is now the size of a dime and has not spread. The only problem she has had is the chemo has caused stomach ulcers and she needed a transfusion.
As long as she watches her diet and takes her meds, she does fine. Will my mother live forever..."no", but each day is one more day that we have cheated this awful thing. There is hope, she needs to remain positive and keep doing things that she likes to do. My mother who always had a weight problem, doesn't have that problem anymore, so she eats like a pig, "good food of course". Her Dr.'s are so amazed, they actually said that they don't know why she is still here, but no one is going to try and figure out why. Hang in there, and I will say a prayer for all involved. My mom has throat cancer and lung cancer. She is not taking treatments again and is part of hospice. Is their anyone who can relate to this story. Give me a time frame from which your love one found out then passed on. I am not scared of an honest answer. I have grieved so much these last two years of my mom fighting cancer that I am ready to see her not suffer. The other day she was screaming in pain so I said to the doctor you got to get someone involved. She is now with hospice and the pain has eased to the point I seen her smile happy smiles for the first time in what seem like a year. Thank you and please be honest if its was a short time. I know it spread quickly and unfortunately she has not giving up smoking. She is smoking about a pack a day.
Please can anyone give me and my family some advice on how to help my aunty. She has had breast cancer and was cleared of that two years ago with chemotherapy. Now she has two tumors on her lung and one on her kidney. We are desperate to help save her life and refuse to believe that there is nothing we can do. The first thing that must be done is to determine exactly what type of cancer your aunt has. Just because there are tumors in her lung doesn't mean she has "lung" cancer. It could be a metastasis from the breast. It is important to know the type so that the correct treatments are used. So, they need to do a biopsy on the tumors. Also, I would recommend a PET scan. It allows the doctors to see all the spots that are suspected of being cancer. It's used to help "stage" the patient. You can help your aunt by becoming as knowledgeable about the disease and it's treatments and support her through her journey. Please don't hesitate to write me personally if you have questions about lung cancer, as my husband has been fighting it for 18 months.
Hi, My name is Melissa and I'm from upstate NY. In May of 200, I was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer after the removal of two ovarian cysts (1 in April '99 and 1 in May '00.) I have now finished with all my chemotherapy which was done in Boston at the Dana Farber (a wonderful institution.)
My treatment included Bleomycin, Etoposide (VP16) and Cisplatin.
I was curious to know if anyone else around my age has experience ovarian cancer, as I know it is more common in older women. Please respond on the message board or you can e-mail me!

Hello, I'm trying to learn more, my wife was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer the end of January, it was very ER+ and a 2 inagressiveness. At the two month checkup after 20 mg of Tamoxifen and monthly Lupron the tumors in the liver and breast were shrinking and bone and lung were unchanged, she was been feeling very good and yesterday we went in for the 4 month checkup and were stunned to find out that the liver tumors had increased greatly, others were about the same. Know want use to enter Phase 1 study of Taxol and Sutent. Is anyone else in that study? What can we expect from the Taxol, I am just devastated and am assuming the worse, Dr gave now time frame but I'm thinking a few months, what should I be thinking? what else can I do.
I have a friend that had breast cancer a year and half ago. I am not sure of the type of cancer but I do know that it was one of the worst type breast cancer that you can have. She was treated with Chemo for 4-5 months then had the mastectomy. That was a year ago and now we found out she has Secondary Bone Cancer. She has had some back and leg pains for the last 6 months. She is having a weeks worth of Chemo pills to see if that helps??????? Not sure why just a week. Any information that you have would be great. Is this curable? Any new treatments? Why a week trial on the chemo meds? What to expect in future. Thank you.
See if you can find out where trials for a vaccanation called theratope are going on. it is speciically for metastatic breast cancer, the results of this have been very good in this patient population and its gentle for people who are not in strong conditon or have been through a lot of chemo. i don't know her exacts, and if she fits in the protocal but with the results they have gotten its worth checking into. there are also monoclonial anibodies for mestatic breast cancer. there is also a new drug, doing better in some trials then tamoxifen does for metastaic breast cancer.
My Mom took chemo/radiation about 4 months ago. she started having back pain about 1.5 months ago. she got a cat scan & a bone scan and they didnt find any cancer or anything else that could be causing the pain. the doctors told her that the pain is from the radiation she had. the pain sometimes is bad and sometimes isnt even there. anyone familiar with this??
I read your post, and first let me congratulate your mom on her clear tests results. You did not mention what type of cancer she had; so I will assume it was invasive enough that the doctor's felt she needed both treatment options.
Let me first say, that I am not a medical expert. I only base my conclusions or thoughts because I have had radiation and know from first hand experience the long-term and short term affects.
It is quite possible that the pain she is experiencing is from the radiation. Keep in mind that although the areas of concern where vital organs are are protected by lead shields there is also a good possibility that that radiation covers areas that are not in need of exposure. I myself received higher doses of what they referred to as mantle radiotherapy back in the 70's when doses that were given in a therapeutic value were much higher. I myself did not have any bone pain per se; but since that 20 years ago I have had many side affects related to my treatment; so your Mom has to be vigilant in documenting everything that happens to her in the years to come. I understand that chemo can have some lasting affects as well; while I did not receive chemotherapy, many of my pals that had, have also experienced some problems.
My best advice is to have your Mom keep a journal; and be very pro-active in her quest to be completely diseased free. I wish her and you the best.

If you don't mind me asking, what about radiation to the head. My mother had a brain tumor removed last week. Radiation will start soon, light doses. She's worried about side effects. What can she expect? A little history, lung cancer was diagnosed a year ago. Non-small cell, very aggressive. Chemo treatments (8) did well with the existing mass in her lung. Thanks for any info.

Hello. My mother recently had a metastastic (sp?) brain tumor removed. She's been surviving lung cancer for just over a year now. She's got to have light doses of radiation now. Could anyone share with me what kind of side effects she might experience? Thanks!
I am undergoing radiation in head and neck areas.Obviously, my throat is sore and I am producing very little saliva. I guess whats driving me nuts the most is the lack of taste.
