The championships are upon us. Good luck to all teams tonight. To Winters and Corning - Show some of the class I know you have. The Sutter team this year did what NO ONE expected them to do - they made it to the playoffs. They lost after a very good game on both sides (though Sutter made some major mistakes). You guys are now in the championship game. Instead of beating up on Sutter, you should be concentrating on the game at hand. Good Luck to both teams. Maser's Mom
Well after wendsay nights game lassen proved a lot about what kind of team they are. Everyone knows how hard it is to win back to back championships. Everyones head hunting for you. But they did it. And they did it with class. And they did it going THROUGH the tuffest teams in the section! lassen great job... Untouchables is right!
Well if you are talking about us putting our flag in paradises field, there was a very valid reason for that. One we take that flag to all our games to show school spirit. Two they urinated on our bleachers (who doesn't have class again?). And three all they did was talk trash on this message board. They talked trash to the papers about the kind of coaching we had, and how we hadn't played anyone and how they were just going to show us who was best... I 100% support the player that stuck it in there field! Frankly sir after all the trash talk there team did, our team was just ready to take it to them... sir not to be rude but you aren't in highschool anymore and you might not be able to understand what its like to be playing highschool football in 02'! Again i'm not trying to be rude but by talking to my father he doesn't understand a lot about what goes on when it comes to those kinds of things. Well for a second i'll like to talk about the class of paradise. After our semi championship win 20-0 #27 took a cheap shot on myself which really made him look foolish but it really showed how much class myself and my teammates have for not retaliating... So we'll leave it at that -Black 77
Well how do you get all pumped up for a football game. If you have a good game boost then post it on the board. So dont tell us how to get pumped. It seems to work really good. We are 43-1
As a parent of a player playing against Lassen yes you guys are very good but to say you guys did it with class is a bit of a reach. To run on a field taunting opposing fans with a team T-shirt then stabbing a flag pole through the heart of it doesnt spell class to me and other schools that I have talked to. Lassen you are very good to win back to back championships against a classy team in Enterprise but you guys dont need to taunt or thrash talk to play good , do you?
Division 1 will be a tough call next year. Lassen will likely be down simply because they lose a lot of great seniors and the JVs were not as good as they have been in the past. Enterprise will still have Bill Siemens, so we'll go with them No. 1 right now. No. 2 is likely Paradise since they return Jeffreys and Delano and have a very good JV group. Third we will go with Foothill based on the return of QB Jeff Bridges and Harrison Fielding. However Shasta, West Valley, PV and Lassen should all be in the mix. Stuart

So is Pleasant Valley or Enterprise the best team in the Section? I say that Downieville, the smallest school in the section that plays basketball, is No. 1. Downieville beat East Nicolaus, EN beat Williams, Williams beat Los Molinos, Los Molinos beat Mercy, Mercy beat Trinity, Trinity beat Yreka, Yreka beat Red Bluff, Red Bluff beat Shasta, Shasta beat Pleasant Valley and Pleasant Valley beat Enterprise. So there's your proof.
Ehat must be the most idiotic statement i'v heard in a long time. Hopefully your just joking around bud, because if your not......You got some problems.
On April 4, 5, and 6 of this year, Steve Smith, of Yureka High School, will be holding a basketball tournament for ages 13-18. It is a 5 on 5 basketball tournament that will be held at the YHS Gymnasium. The cost is $185.00 per team and the top three teams as well as the all stars and mvp's of the tournament will receive awards. If you are interested in putting a team in call 430-822-1130 and ask for Steve...thank you
If i can get enough girls teams(6 at the least)then there will be a girls tournament as well. If you want to get your team a spot call or email me at stevesm@hotmail.com. Get your team together and sign up quick.
Can someone give more details about what happened in the Westside League 171's finals match? I see Hanley got DQ'd and Johnson won - what happened there?
Hanley was disqualified for having too many penalty points. He had some penalty points early in the match and then compounded the problem with several illegal starting positions later in the match.
I was woundering if Lanley will get to wrestle this week. The CIF rule says that anyone who is DQ will not be able to participate in the next event.Since the next event is a qualifier for Masters is Hanley done. If he is not done what kind of example does it set for the rest of the section. Also if he was DQ he should have lost all of his team points and not finished second.
Their seems to be a change in the story somewhere. Our reporter asked the ref after Hanley's match at the WSL meet why he was disqualified and the ref said penalty points. Now he says flagrant misconduct. Very confusing. Stuart
I spoke with two of the coaches who were at the section seeding meeting and this incident was brought up there. The story was just as confusing there, from the sounds of it. Interestingly, the concensus was that the incident merited flagrant misconduct, and that the referee had originally called that, NOT technical violations (repeat starting position violations are NOT grounds for DQ). It seems that the report filed by the referee was vague as to the exact nature of the call, although he has been telling everybody it was misconduct. Once Hanley wrestled in the divisionals the next weekend, it all became moot, as the section officials all agreed it was too late to do anything about it then. Sort of like the "next pitch," or "next play" rules in baseball and football. It is unfortunate, though, that the incident occurred at all, that the coaches matside weren't more interested in the behavior than the win, and that, with a week to intervene, the league and section officials did not investigate and rule one way or the other. It throws a shadow on the character of wrestler, the coaches involved, and the whole section. And what a shame that is, as it has been a very enjoyable and exciting season for north section wrestling. Best of luck to ALL north section wrestlers in the upcoming Section Championship, and in Stockton next week! By the way, will we see predictions from you on here, Stuart?
If the referee did indeed call Hanley for flagrant misconduct, why were the tournament officials not told? Why were team points not deducted? Why was Hanley allowed to accept his medal? Because obviously flagrant misconduct was not called. I highly doubt there is any conspiracy to give Corning a league title, mainly because one team that lost a league title due to flagrant misconduct in the past was Corning. The Cardinals had one player hit another during a match. That wrestler was ejected and Corning ended up losing the WSL tournament as a result. Why would the section commissioner or the section as a whole care who wins the section championship? If the ref called flagrant misconduct at the WSL meet, it is his responsibility to make sure the wrestler is kicked out of the tournament and the official scorekeepers are notified. Obviously this was not done because it more than likely never happened.
You can not be disqualified for too many starting position penalties. You can be disqualified for 4 technical violations. Such as Locking Hands, Full Nelson….. You can also be disqualified for unsportsman like conduct. If you are disqualified for unsportsman like conduct you are NOT eligible to compete in the following competition. I could be wrong, I have only been involved in High School wrestling for about 20 years. For the sake of the Corning team, I hope Hanley was disqualified for locking hands or other technical violation. I guess we will find out on Friday what the ruling was.
There's two different types of disqualification. THere is disqualification for penalty points and there is disqualification for flagrant misconduct. Disqualification for penalty points only disqualifies the wrestler from the match, not the tournament. Disqualification for flagrant misconduct disqualifies a wrestler from the tournament. Hanley was not disqualified for flagrant misconduct, only for penalty points. Several years ago, Corning had a wrestler disqualified from the WSL tournament for flagrant misconduct after he hit an Orland wrestler during a championship match. He was disqualified from the match and tournament and Orland was able to beat Corning because Corning lost that wrestler's points. THat was not the case with Hanley.

Widening the zone a little helps, but it's not even necessary to drop the upper margin because it's only at the armpit. If a pitcher can throw armpit high over the plate, he deserves a strike call.
This will be the start of my seventh year in LL. During this time, I've been a coach and umpire. For you umpire purists, I've ump'ed more games than I have coached. Please do not hold the coaching job against me. However, all during this time I've been troubled
with strike zone definition in Rule 2.00 and its application.
Now there has been tons written on the subject within this e-group as well as other lists.
I'm not trying to rehash what has already been said (though that may indeed happen).
I have learned first hand that the zone must be wider at the lower levels of play or the game will be full of walks and last forever. I understand that baseball rules are to be interpreted.
What troubles me is that we as umpires must aways interpret the stike zone definition.
I really wish the rule makers would recognize what everyone knows, that the zone is different for each level of play. I really wish that the rules would reflect that.
If it's going to be belt high, then say belt high.
Don't say arm pits or the numbers.
If it's going to be one or two ball widths outside of the plate, then say it.
This year I'm an assistant UIC for my league at the Jr/Sr level (82 teams, 1100+ players, Peanuts thru Seniors) and will participate in district wide umpire training. I will repeat the strike zone mantra during the plate training sessions, as the mantra was given
to me. But you know guys, I don't like it. The rule is the rule and this one is not the type that can be broken.
I can't begin to tell you the crap I get from the more experienced Jr/Sr level coaches, men that I respect, about calling the book definition of the zone. I'm consistent, but I'm thinking of dropping my high end and widening the outside this year.
So should I use a book definition for Majors? How about dropping the high end and widening it a bit for Juniors? And drop it even more for Seniors because that's what they see in high school?
I'm curious how others face this problem or am I the only one worrying
about it?
Runner on first, ground ball to the first baseman. The first baseman doesn't tag the runner as he goes by, but he touches first. The umpire (me) gives the out sign and says "he's out"(but I don't say "batter is out"). The runner thinks he's been called out and starts walking to the dugout. The batter stands on first as if he is safe. Is the runner out for giving up any attempt to advance? If so, when -- crossing the baseline toward the dugout? Entering the dugout? On a play like that, is it the umpire's task to yell "batter is out" to make crystal clear who has been called out. (This was AAA level so the players aren't quite as alert to subtleties).
